Frightful Fall Read-a-Thon: Mini-Challenge #2

It's time for mini-challenge #2! This one is going to be a little more difficult, but I think what people come up with will be really interesting.  What I want you to do is take your current read and take one sentence from three of the following pages:  page 1, page 77, page 179, page 255, page 360, or the next to the last page (I picked a diverse number for books of varying lengths).  Now, take the three sentences and make them into a short paragraph, but make the paragraph scary or suspenseful (if you have to add scary words or sentences to accomplish this, feel free).  Italicize the original text from the book or, if you leave it in the comments, put quotes around the original text.  You can leave yours in the comment section below and/or post it on your blog.  This mini-challenge will be open until Friday (10/7) at 12:30pm CST.  I will randomly select three winners from all the entries and each winner will pick a prize from the prize page.

Okay, I decided just today that I'm going to start The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan since I've been wanting to read it for a long time.  So, here is my paragraph (mine will not be entered in the giveaway):

I am surprised that I don't growl like a wounded animal cornered by dogs.  I've been in this cage for weeks. I fiddle with the dirty binding rope still circling my wrist and wonder when he will come back and if he will kill me...or worse.  My body hurts so bad I want to throw up.

Some read-a-thon business:

  1. From: The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman by Bruce Robinson (not a scary book):

"There were so many facets of this he didn't understand but it all conspired into something upleasant, like the uneasy feeling he got looking through a letter box, that same fearful remembrance of being a little boy and staring up the hall of an empty house. The fear that Rob might off him, indeed, snuff the lot of them while they slept, was very real. There was a constant smell of meat cooking."

    Good fun!

  3. From "The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin"

My arm hurt and I ribbed it before picking up my textbooks and notebook from my desk.[Suddenly, I felt an icy hand on the back of my neck.] I whirled around, but no one around me looked particularly guilty. I shoved my things into my messenger bag with unnecessary force [before hurrying out of the room].

  6. From Dearly Departe by Lia Habel:

I was buried alive. I'd already tasted humiliation and failure. Final coughs were indulged in... I didn't mean to kill anyone! It twitched a few times and was still.
